Role overview
We're looking for a Media Manager with a strong desire to inspire people through our unique approach to development. VSO has some great stories to tell about the impact we're having, but we need to get these in the right print and broadcast media to help significantly increase our development work.
You'll ideally be a journalist by training, or you've worked in a similar role for a number of years at another NGO. You've a good eye for a story, established media contacts, and the ability to build strong effective relationships with volunteers and colleagues.
You'll be comfortable planning and delivering high-profile media activity globally. An understanding of international development issues is essential. We'd also expect you to have a thorough knowledge of the media landscape, at least in the UK, but ideally including the other countries we work in too.
You'll also be confident managing media incidents and issues that represent a reputatio nal risk, and be able to speak with authority to senior colleagues and key stakeholders to manage any media implications.
Skills, qualifications and experience
* Significant experience of crisis and reputation management
* Experience of leading, networking and influencing effectively within a dispersed organisation and of advising senior staff
* Significant proven experience in people management, performance management and supporting the learning and development of individuals.
* Understanding of International development policy, the institutional aid environment and specifically UKAID
* Experience of using media to influence key opinion formers.
* Good understanding of media strategies and have up to date knowledge of media trends and tools
* Educated to degree level or equivalent
